Hey everyone! I know I am late getting this up but just wanted to do a quick tutorial on how to decorate your porch/balcony for Christmas. I decorated mine in less than 30 minutes. However I will say that I have a pretty small balcony! Also I used all the decorations I had from last year. To save money I used my regular outdoor cushions (that I use in the spring and summer) and did the color theme around those cushions instead of going and buying a whole new set of cushions in red for the holidays. Here is what the finished product looked like:
To get started I cleaned my porch off. I swept the floor and wiped down all the outdoor furniture.
Next I put down my outdoor rug.
Then I got out my garland for the railing that I used last year. Unfortunately it ended up getting squashed in storage so it is pretty flat. I tried to puff it up a bit but alas it is still flat! I decided to go ahead and put it up for this year and then after Christmas I am going to take it completely apart and redo it next year instead of trying to store it all together again.
I used these plastic ties to hold it to the railing. These things are awesome! Because they are clear you do not even notice them and they really work well at holding the decorations up.
Here is a close up:
Once everything is in place it should look something like this:
Then I hung a strand of icicle lights on the front side of the railing. You could also just wrap the lights around the railing if you do not have icicle lights.
Next I started on my outdoor tree. I always put it on top of this small table so that you can see if from the ground level better (as my condo is on the second floor). First thing you want to do if fluff that tree! I know, I know we all hate this part! But you have to do it to make the tree look better and give volume to the branches.
Then I wove some blue fabric into the tree. You want it to be kind of like a “S” shape
For the topper I used some turquoise peacock feathers
And then I added some green to give it more color
So far the tree should look something like this:
Now I broke out the ornaments which I store in a large box for protection.
You want to start with your biggest decorations first. So I started with the green flowers and then the butterflies. Then I started filling in the bare spots with some of the smaller ornaments.
I always buy decorations in odd numbers like 3, 5, 7 because I think it looks better to have odd numbers of the same decorations than even. These are some close ups of the ornaments themselves.
Lastly I added my bulbs.
Notice the hole in the center of the tree?
It is a perfect spot for a green bulb!
Just fill in all those empty spots with bulbs and BAM your tree is finished!
Next I moved on to my windows. I hung icicle lights using command hooks. Thank God for command hooks!
And then I used command strips to attach these bows. Thank God for command strips!
These command strips are so easy to pull off after Christmas too! They make clean up super quick. And I will tell you a little secret…I leave the command hooks that hold the icicle lights up all year round! haha. I of course take the lights down but the command hooks stay!
Next I moved on to decorating the small table between my rocking chairs with some placemats and outdoor dishes from Pier One. When I have guests over we often sit outside on the porch and have breakfast which is really nice when the weather is not too cold.
I also added a large green lantern which is really nice to put a long candle in at night when we are sitting out on the porch.
Now for the buffet (which you can’t really see in the other picture because it is located behind my door). I started by putting down two baskets which I use to put plates of food on. When serving outside you always have to worry about bugs getting in your food so these have net tops that you cover the food with once the plate is inside.
These baskets are from World Market and I believe are hand painted. Very beautiful. I mostly use these in the summer but since they matched the decorations I brought them out anyway!
Then I added a reindeer and tree I got after Christmas last year.
Lastly I added some turquoise poinsettias and some left over ornaments onto the table.
Next I put this large tree I got after Christmas last year at Walmart in the upper corner of the porch.
On the bottom of the buffet I added a large bowl and some candle holders. I also put a small ice bucket down.
And once everything was done it looked like this:
I also added my Christmas wreath my mother made me last year:
I added my outdoor cushions and FINALLY it was finished! This such a nice place to have set up for guests to enjoy their morning coffee! Or at night you can sit under blankets with the glowing Christmas lights.
And that’s all folks! Hope this gave you some ideas for your own balcony or porch! Thank you for stopping by my sight and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!
